Zencoder Loads Closed Captioning Support, Aspera Integration, Dolby Digital Plus

Zencoder announced several new features at the NAB Show, I knew I should have been there, that will boost its usefulness and make it the first cloud transcoding provider to support closed captioning for multiple formats including Apple HTTP Live Streaming.

FCC Closed Caption Requirements

April 30th is the beginning of requirements for closed captioning on Internet-delivered broadcast content. from the FCC:

Pursuant to the Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010, the FCC revises its regulations to require closed captioning of IP-delivered video programming that is published or exhibited on television with captions after the effective date of the new regulations.

Prior to the adoption of the CVAA, the Communications Act of 1934, as amended (the ‘‘Act’’), required the use of closed captioning on television, but not on IP-delivered video programming that was not part of a broadcaster or multichannel video programming distributor (‘‘MVPD’’) service. That changed with the enactment of the CVAA, which  directed the Federal Communications Commission (‘‘Commission’’) to revise its regulations to require closed captioning of IP-delivered video programming that is published or exhibited on television with captions after the effective date of the new regulations.

"With features like closed captioning, enhanced content security and transfer, and Dolby audio,
content providers such as broadcasters and studios can take advantage of the cloud for professional
transcoding," said Jon Dahl, CEO and co-founder of Zencoder. "This gives media customers the tools
they need to quickly and efficiently publish video to any Internet-enabled device."

File Transfer Power Boost Go!

We all know it's a major pain in the workflow to get video up and down to the cloud and need all the help we can get. While I'm no fan of Aspera (because of Faspex client issues I've had as EA uses it for video distribution), they have a wide range of offerings, some of which are now coming to bear on the online video content area. Zencoder is implementing Aspera's FASP technology which offers file encryption (AES-256) and AWS Simple Storage Service (S3) integration. So your content is encrypted at all times while in the cloud except when it's actually being transcoded and since FASP is a transfer acceleration technology it also helps facilitate quicker movement between locations.

PlayReady, Set Go! Whoa whoa, wait a sec…

Also integrated into Zencoder is Microsoft PlayReady Encryption Support. You know PlayReady, the DRM that makes it nearly impossible to watch certain programs on your Windows 7 machine with older TV cards, etc. That also includes a new partnership with BuyDRM which is how they're integrating BuyDRM's KeyOS platform.

Rock on Zencoder!

On a final note, haha! Zencoder also announced that they're working on getting support in place for Dolby Digital Plus and surround sound.
