Optimizing YouTube Tags Best Practices for Tagging Your Videos: Reel Producer Tips #31

Is it better to use a single tag for your videos or to use a lot of tags and litter the tag field with as many keywords as you can that are relevant to your video? One of our readers asked us that question in a comment on a previous video and so I posed it to Nalts for his official answer.

QUESTION: What advice do you have for writing good tags for your videos?

Thanks, very useful. Wonder if it's worth trying to own "boobs"?

haha Probably not, unless you need to own that niche for something.

Tim Schmoyer Agreed, not exactly niche...

This was very helpful. I am very successful at video seo for my keywords in all my niches for YouTube but I got some great tips here for putting it in before your url and also spelling mistakes. I tend to use 10-13 tags in my tag box specifically relevant to the video and my niche and then two in the headline and 2-5 in my description and that seems to work for me at the moment. But we all know the rules change so often so you have to keep testing. With the news that it is more important on length of viewing now for your YouTube ranking this will be interesting to see how the view buyers get people to watch till the end to try and beat the system. Great tips thank you.

Hopefully it'll be pretty difficult to "beat the system" by faking how long viewers are watching the video. I'm sure people will try, but that seems pretty difficult to do in a way that doesn't break YouTube's Terms of Service.

Many times I made the mistake of using to many tags. Thanks for this.

Since YouTube shows you results for the actual correct spelling and you have to "force" them to show results for misspellings I don't see much value there as there was years ago.

Also don't forget to include phrasing in your tags:

Also, I presented at SMX East about conventional keyword research tools being a great starting point but you'll need to expand on it using video/platform specific data as video search habits can differ and the keywords further down the popularity list may be the gold you were looking for.

Yeah, good thoughts here. Thanks for sharing them! I think there's still a place for misspellings, though, because YouTube and Google don't auto-correct everything and a lot of third-party tools don't correct misspellings, either.

Interesting article. This really helps as we have hundreds of videos on our channel, always wondered what the best way to tag them was.

Hi Tim! thanks for the info and I got a question well it's not only about YouTube- what if I want to promote my video on metacafe and viddler right after I uploaded it on YT [the same video] should I be tagging them differently on the other websites?
    What do you say?

Tags are always a big?-mark. Good insights, reminders and suggestions for integrating the TITLE, BODY and TAGS. Enjoy your channel.

I swear I WILL NEVER get this! I tag relevantly yet.... nothing seems to work all that well for me! Darnit! :(

Great tips. I noticed Kevin brought up the fact that people put their clickable URL before the main keyword in the Description. Do you all have a better strategy about where to place it? He just said, "It's taking up good real estate" but did not provide any hint on where he would place it for the best conversion.
