YouTube Partnering With LG To Create A Mobile Device for 3D Junkies

Despite my wishes to the contrary, 3D is still pretty hot in the world of video. Hollywood keeps pumping out films in 3D, and even television commercials and TV shows are getting into the act. So naturally the technology should come to mobile devices, right? That's what YouTube and LG think, as they're teaming up on a new device to bring the power of 3D filmmaking to the amateur masses on the go.

The device is called the LG Optimus 3D, and naturally it's an Android device--not sure why YouTube would partner with LG on a fancy Windows phone. The Optimus 3D features dual camera lenses which allow the user to capture 3D imagery. After capturing the video, users can then immediately upload the clip using a dedicated YouTube app.

YouTube Partnering With LG To Create A Mobile Device for 3D JunkiesBut wait... there's more! The Optimus 3D also has a fairly large 4.3-inch screen that will allow users to view 3D images and video without needing glasses.

The companies released a joint statement full of compliments and optimism:

"The new partnership is part of a broader push into 3D entertainment by LG and the world's largest online video community. YouTube and LG collaborated to enable the delivery and sharing of 3D video onto mobile devices in a way that makes it simple and easy for consumers."

It's not YouTube's first exploration into 3D--they've been allowing 3D video uploads since 2009--but it is the first time they've partnered with a mobile device brand to help create products specifically designed for the facilitation of 3D video.

If you love 3D video... first of all, why? Just kidding... if you love it, you can go to YouTube's 3D Channel to watch tons of added-dimension clips. If you're like me, and you were tired of 3D two years ago, then you're probably not the target market for the Optimus 3D.

Indeed, the people selling 3D technology and content have always seemed more bullish on its future than the consumers it's being marketing too. Sales of 3D televisions, for instance, have yet to live up to expectations. The hardware manufacturers and Hollywood studios want 3D to succeed because there's so much money in it, but my gut tells me 3D will never be anything more than one style of many. Some films will be live action, some will be animated, some will be in 3D.

But maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part. But even if I'm right, it means that 3D will have a long, healthy run. And it means there's probably a market for the Optimus 3D mobile device. That market just doesn't happen to include me.
