YouTube Testing New Site Design Again: Here’s How to Preview It!

YouTube Testing New Site Design Again: Here’s How to Preview It!

What is certain in this world is death, taxes, and YouTube changing their site about every 5 minutes.  And also, not everyone will see the changes and it makes everyone else who knows their YouTube has changed seem crazy.  Heck, I have two laptops and they show different YouTubes from each other today.  What is being implemented is a cleaner look that many compare to Google+, where Google continues to try to integrate all of their properties into one uniform look.  The new YouTube has some cool features, and some things that are missing from the previous version.  So let's take a look.

YouTube: Before and After

First, here's what the new YouTube looks like:

And here's what it used to look like and still looks like on other computers:

So you may notice that things look a lot cleaner, that left side isn't so busy with menu items, and you can actually close many of them out. When you click on a channel in your subscription list, you are taken to a page with the exact same format as the home page, and it will show you all of that channel's recent uploads and likes and whatnot. You can choose whether you just want their uploads or all of their activity.

What seems to be missing is the ability to give a "blanket" command to "show uploads only" for all channels all at once, but you can customize each channel to show only uploads or all the activity. That might be cool for some, frustrating for others.

There is also a video counter next to the subscribed channels in your list.

Also, when you click on a video, you'll still be able to see all your subscribed channels on the left side. You also have a drop-down menu on the left side that I'll call the "More" menu underneath all of your subscriptions. If you have clicked on a channel in your subscription list, the pull-down menu will be, "More from (so-and-so's) channel." If you clicked on a video from your "Now Playing" page, it will be a "More from Now Playing" menu. Here's an example of the change:

And here's the old version:

YouTube also appears to have gotten rid of the "From YouTube" list from the previous iteration, which gave you broad genres like music and entertainment, but it also had a nifty "trending" tab that I liked to go to, because it would show what videos were getting a flurry of activity that day.

Get the New YouTube with Google Chrome Hack

For those of you who cannot wait to get the new YouTube design, there's a hack for people who use Google Chrome, as provided by OMG!Chrome!:

1. Open Chrome, and head to youtube.com. Once the page has fully loaded, and with Chrome in focus, hit Ctrl+Shift+J – (Alt+Cmd+J in OS X) – to bring up the console.

2. Enter this line of code:

document.cookie="VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE=jZNC3DCddAk;"

3. Hit the enter key on your keyboard and refresh the page.

If that doesn't work, OMG!Chrome! got a second line of code from a commenter on the site:

document.cookie="VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE=jZNC3DCddAk; path=/; domain=.youtube.com";window.location.reload();

You should be able to then enjoy the new YouTube.

Do You Like the New YouTube Design?

My initial thoughts are that I like the new design.  It appears to make things a little more convenient to navigate, and it's more organized.  But I'm sure it will upset a whole bunch of people, because it always does.

Here's a video of someone taking a look at the new YouTube.  There are some different looks than from what even I've shown above:

Anyway, what do you think of the new design?

    while it does look ok it has some features i dont care for . for instance it shows what every subscription your subscribed to does i.e. they like a video or comment on a video, and it has youtube recommendations based on videos you have watched and it jumbles all of this into your feed with no option to sort it out and see just the new videos that have been uploaded by your subscriptions

  • Craig Smith

    Thanks for that tip worked like a charm, I come across the new layout several times in the past week while doing video searches on google in incognito mode then clicking on video thumbnail. Thanks

    The Icon under the video looks to huge for brands

    I don't like the added menu beside the videos because it makes the page to big to fit on the whole screen. Its annoying, one thing I hate is a scroll bar at the bottom of a page.

    If the new layout helps make YT connect better with G+ then I'm all for it… onward towards GooTubePlus! Eventually I see the interactions on one platform showing up in the other… we shall see how long before That Prediction happens!

    Somehow I can only see the new page. Apparently I've been selected to try it out but they didn't even ask me. I woke up and the new page is just there now. I hate it. It has far less options when it comes to your subscriptions. It's confusing and you can't choose to see only new uploads anymore. You have to see ALL uploads in random order. It's even showing me videos I already watched months ago on my home page as if they were brand new videos. It's rubbish. I want the old page back.

    This cookie hack also works fine in Safari. Just paste the code into the error console. Now the question is how to revert back to the previous version (for me, to bring back the checkbox functionality to the Subscriptions page). Deleting YouTube cookies doesn't seem to do the trick. =

      I figured out how to get rid of it. Instead of jZNC3DCddAk you just replace that with none. So you would type the following into the same box, and then refresh.

      document.cookie="VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE=none;"

      I just was poking around trying to figure it out, and I'm glad it worked.

    For one thing… you can't "see more videos" from the same account anymore. At least not on the page/video you're currently watching You have to click their name and go through the list of videos on their personal page. But this is often inconvenient, especially if you are watching a multi-part video or if you don't really care to go to their page and just wanted a quick look at what they posted next or just previously. Anyway… I don't like the new design for that reason specifically but for other reasons as well.

    So glad you posted this. I saw this the other day and skyped another computer geek friend of mine and he was NOT seeing it so thought I was nuts..I sent him screen shots also. As you noted I was seeing one thing in Chrome and a different thing in FF. What makes me crabby is that those of us that create videos and teach newbies this can be maddening. I have been on line since 1999 and interfaces remained fairly stable with little change for many years. This recent constant updating of G+/Places, FB and YT and more, every month makes it challenging for newbies and those of us trying to teach them.

    I HATE THIS SHIT. I can't post any comments on the second page of ANY video—I tried to, and this "Do you want to change your screen name to your REAL name" crap popped up. I DIDN'T want to change it to my real name, and then I couldn't get rid of the message. It's a pain in the ass, and now I can't comment on the 2nd comment page of any video. Anyone else having this problem???

    • nyz

      YES ME ! what did you do to comment on the 2nd page? because i already
      did that and i can't… sorry,please explain to me, i already entered to
      google + and therefore my name was changed, and even now i can't
      comment on the 2nd page, how did you do it to comment on the 2nd page
      mate?

  • Kevin Darnell Peterson

    I can't go to my inbox. I can not go to my own channel from the home page. it shows me useless junk like when my subscriptions add videos to playlists (why do i care?). It insists on defaulting to mostly recommending me videos when all I want to do is look at my subscriptions. It recommends me old videos that I've watched dozens of times already. Big Thumbs Down so far.

  • Saso Alauf

    some of the videos don't load up since I used the hack…is there a way to undo it?

  • Sei

    Just in case you want to get rid of it, use the same keyboard shortcut but instead enter the following: document.cookie="VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE=none;"
