Wireless Home Digital Interface Product Roundup

Wireless Home Digital Interface Product Roundup

Unlike, well, pretty much everyone, I have had a WHDI device in my house for much of the year. What is it? WHDI is wireless HD video streaming and it is brilliant. Now I've been in contact with the Wireless Home Digital Interface people for quite some time, since CES maybe in January. Admittedly, the product I have is somewhat rudimentary and I can think of a dozen things to make it better. But now, you don't have to worry about any of that since WHDI put together a list of everything available on the market presently.

What is WHDI?

WHDI revolutionizes the home multimedia experience by wirelessly delivering interactive HD video from any device to any display. It gives consumers convenience and flexibility to connect HDTVs wirelessly to video sources such as Notebooks, Mobile Phones, Set-top boxes and Blu-ray players. The technology enables wireless delivery of uncompressed HDTV throughout the home with video rates of up to 1080p in the 5Ghz unlicensed band.

WHDI Consortium was formed by Amimon, Hitachi, Motorola, Samsung, Sharp, Sony and LG Electronics.

The great thing about these products is that a source, like your computer, can be in a completely different room and the devices wirelessly transmit the HD video to whatever display you have the receiver hooked up to. In my case it's the computer and the digital projector. I'm hoping to cut down on cabling overall to the projector soon and want to get a couple transmitters that can all connect to the receiver and then I can just switch the input on that and that's 2 less cables I need to run halfway cross the room.

I thought wireless hdmi was going to be in the 54-60 ghz range, not the more congested 5ghz range?

Does all these various standards mean we are going to have a hdd/blueray style war for the next 3 years?

Why cant they all agree on a common standard? We aren't all tech reporters who get our equipment for free.-

At this point, WHDI products are the best for in house wireless video/audio tranmission, with 3D 1080P video quality. But competition is very keen in this area, there are other technologies kept on improving (such as wifi direct and 60GHz). To stay on the top, the WHDI group has to continuously improve their technology.
