Youtube HD Update – Large High-Definition Video Player Layout
A few weeks back, we posted news about the fact that Youtube was testing HD (high-definition) video playback. Shortly after that, Youtube officially launched HD video playback on their site. When it was first launched, videos in HD would play within the new widescreen 16:9 default player on Youtube. Now, when you choose the HD playback, the layout of the page is modified to display a much larger video player that expands the width of the page. The new video size is a huge 855*480 pixels (actual resolution is 1280×720) and the player is 855*505 pixels. Apparently this change was made back on December 5, but some users are just now seeing the update.

New – Dailymotion Subtitle Capabilities in Multiple Languages
DailyMotion call themselves the world’s largest independent video entertainment website (so does Metacafe). The new feature allows uploading and input of subtitles directly from the video edit menu. Additionally, they support multiple languages as well.
YouTube Launches New Video Upload Tool Redesign Beta
Finally, YouTube has announced on their blog that they have released an updated version of their upload tool in Beta. Users in the past have complained about the file-size limitations in the Youtube upload tool and the lack of abilities to upload multiple videos at once. The new video file uploader (seen below) has been available in private beta for a few months and is now available to users by logining into your YouTube account and clicking on this link to opt in.
Upload AVCHD Video with Motionbox
Back in March, Motionbox announced support for high-definition video for its premium users. Just the other day, Motionbox announced that they now offer video tools that will support the direct upload and editing of native high-definition AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) formatted video. As far as I know, this the first online video sharing site to support upload of AVCHD formatted video files. After you upload these files, which are typically quite large, they directly transcode the files on their server and then allow you to edit the video using the Motionbox web-based editing tools.

How to Encode H.264/MPEG-4 Videos for Video Sharing
These guidelines will ultimately present a compromise between maintaining a small file size (less than 100MB for Youtube) and maintaining as much original information from the video content itself as possible to ensure the highest quality result. While this is our recommendation specifically for encoding for use on Youtube, these settings should be good overall for most other video sharing sites as well.
