Reel Success with Video Thumbails in Google Universal Search
UPDATE – So, looks like Google is still playing with letting other sites show thumbnails in the SERPS. They have recently removed these thumbnails from appearing in an organic search. More to come on this as it appears they are being filtered for in google with the duplicate content filter for some reason.
We’ve posted lots in the past about Google’s universal search initiative and the promise that it has for website video SEO. We’ve also posted in the past about the fact that although Youtube video thumbnails are dominant throughout the universal search results pages, other video sites are successfully showing thumbnails in the SERPs as well including Metacafe, Videojug, Ted.com, 5min.com, and others. We have even tested our own video thumbnails in Google previously to see that they do appear in Google’s SERP pages, but we had not seen them appear yet in the Universal one-box results.
I am pleased to tell you that it is possible, if done properly – and We did it with our little site
Video Thumbnail Images for Bloggers a “BUG” on Google SERPS – Problem Resolved
This past week I was in Toronto for Christmas and decided to do some Google keyword searches for my site. What I found was a bit odd in that there was a new thumbnail appearing for my site’s result (see below). I thought that perhaps this was a test going on at google.ca (google canada) but then I also received an email from a reader that was concerned because she publishes a site about Rob Pattinson and there was a thumbnail of an attractive female next to her site’s search result on Google. I then found that the same thing was happening to my site in the USA.

So we asked the panel at the Search Engine Strategies Chicago conference, The Next Wave for Online Video: What do you see as the biggest shortcomings with how Google is indexing and displaying video in search results today?

The President’s Weekly Address Video Is Search Engine Optimized

Ok, so he isn’t President just yet, but that hasn’t stopped US president-elect Barack Obama from starting change already. Obama has changed the Democrats’ national weekly address and has released it as an online video, search engine optimized and all.
It seems that either Obama’s team either knows what they are doing with online video (IE, has been reading ReelSEO.com
or they just got lucky… Not only are they releasing these the videos on YouTube, AOL, MSN, but they are also making it available on Change.gov as a High-resolution, Quicktime format movie file. I wonder if they have a Video sitemap. In addition, they actually have the correct Title tags, URL convention, etc…
New Grouped Video Search Results in Google Universal Search
Well, if you haven’t already noticed, it seems that the testing we found out about a few weeks back is the direction that Google has decided to go for the current interface of the Google Universal search results for videos in organic search. It appears that Google has adjusted the interface for video results that are part of universal search and are now promoting only two videos in the first 10 results if the search query is strongly associated with relevant video results.
New Google Universal Search Video Thumbnail Tests
Ever since Google launched it’s Universal Search initiative, we have seen them test various formats for the display of universal search results in the search results pages (SERPS). We have shown a you few examples in the past of some testing that Google has done with display of video results and the video thumbnail.

VSEO – Video Search Engine Optimization (VSEO) Session
The following is a recap of the session, titled “Video Search Engine Optimization (VSEO),” from the Search Engine Strategies (SES) conference in San Jose, CA – August 18th, 2008
The big hero of this session was TubeMogul. As you all know, TubeMogul is a service that enables you to syndicate your videos to all of the major video sites. It also provides analytics tools for monitoring performance across each of the syndicated sites. Gregory Markel was the first to mention it (stating several times that he has no financial interest in the company), and several other panelists said that they use it as well. Although Tubemogul is not a tool to optimize video hosted on your own site, it is a strategy for search engine visibility via syndication of video content across multiple popular video sharing websites.
Is Google Universal Search Biased Towards YouTube?
The short answer is…. It certainly seems so! There was a great post today from Sherwood Stranieri of SearchEngineLand titled, “Is Google Universal Search A Walled Garden?.” The nice thing about this article is that the author takes a fairly objective approach, giving Google the benefit of the doubt to begin with. However, research offered in the post does seem to demonstrate that Google may be preferentially treating Youtube videos within universal search results.
Google applies “clustering” and titles to video results

Google is now featuring video listings from its universal search results pages in a 2-column, 2×2 format, similar to its format for featuring 2-columns of links of popular websites….
