Hulu is Picked by AP as the Best Web Site of The Year
Hulu, the online video destination site that just launched in 2008 with a collaborative effort between NBC and Fox was picked as AP’s (Associate Press) 2008 pick for best website of the year. Although there is no information regarding what the criteria was for picking the best site, there are plenty of excellent reasons why the site deserves the attention.
Distribution Deals Help Google Increase TV Ad Inventory
As of September Google has been selling time through Google TV Adwords for NBC advertising inventory. The announcement was made on September 24th on the Google offline ads blog.
Again they’ve made another deal, this time with Bloomberg TV. Starting November 6th Google started allowing advertisers to target Bloomberg TV viewers in the US. While this was previously available through a partnership with Dish Network it is now a direct link between the two firms and gives advertisers more access to more inventory there. From the looks of things it’s the first of many that will be coming soon to the Google TV Ads flock.
Brains behind Hulu – George Kliavkoff – leaves NBC
George Kliavkoff, the man who helped draw up the blueprint for a string of successful digital media services–from Hulu to Major League Baseball Advance Media–is leaving NBC Universal at the end of the year, CNET News has learned.
Silverlight Announces H.264 Support for Online HD Video
Microsoft Silverlight has recently played a major role helping to shape some of the world’s biggest events in recent months. Silverlight – Microsoft’s cross-browser, cross-platform solution for delivering rich interactive applications and content experiences on the Web – helped viewers experience both the Olympic Games and the U.S. Democratic National Convention on the Web, providing an interactive, high-quality way for people to view both events.
Later this week, at the International Broadcasting Conference (IBC) 2008 in Amsterdam, Microsoft Corp. will demonstrate an important new capability for Silverlight – playback of H.264-based video. H264 is a standard video specification that delivers high-definition video over a variety of delivery channels. During the event, Microsoft will also highlight how customers in Europe are reaping the benefits of adopting Silverlight.
Online Video Advertising Industry Report For Q3 2008
Online video ad network, LiveRail recently released a complete report of the online video advertising industry titled, “State Of The Industry Report for Q3 2008″. This exhaustive report (below) highlights both the growth of online video advertising as well as the challenges with online video advertising.
According to the report, online video advertising currently only represents 2.36% of all online advertising expenditures. In addition, less than 21% of internet video streams are currently being monetized. As a result of the opportunity, online video ad spending is forecast to grow 55% in 2009 vs 2008 to almost a billion dollars.
Films and TV Shows Being Screened Via Online Video
Remember our post on January 1st of this year, titled, “10 Online Video Predictions for 2008?” If you do, you will recall that # 7 in our list was – Exclusive Online TV:
“I expect to see TV networks test and pilot new TV shows and episodes online in 2008.”
Well, that prediction is ringing true (somewhat – I know, I said “pilot”) with some recent news from both Youtube and its rival, Hulu. First, Hulu just announced that they will be launching a fall lineup that includes the debuts of several network TV shows before they air on television. Secondly, YouTube is going to screen a full-length feature film online in the next few months (more below).
CCTV Reaches 100M Uniques With Olympic Video Coverage
The 2008 Olympics was full of big news: The most gold medals ever won by a single person, and, for China, an astounding number of gold medals. However, the news doesn’t stop there! According to WebTrends Analytics, more than 6 million visitors a day were hitting Chinese largest broadcaster site, CCTV.com during the Beijing Olympic Games ushering in what Alex Yoder, CEO of WebTrends calls, “… the coming of age for the Internet in China.” What’s more is that the traffic surpassed that of the leading US Broadcaster, NBC and online channel, Yahoo!.
75% of US Internet Users Watched Online Video in May
comScore, a leader in measuring the digital world, today released May 2008 data from the comScore Video Metrix service, reporting that U.S. Internet users viewed more than 12 billion online videos during the month, representing an increase of 45 percent versus year ago.

Hulu To Open To The Public This Week?
Hulu, the NBC-News Web video site, might launch as early as this Wednesday according to LostRemote. No official date has been announced by Hulu, though a first quarter launch has been expected for some time. According to the Silicon Alley Insider, they also expect Hulu to launch possibly this week as Hulu has a meeting today with the company’s analysts.
CBS & NBC Offer Classic Shows Online
Just one day after NBC announced its decision to stream classic shows on its Web sites, CBS announced that it will also be offering a number of classic show titles from its library available on CBS.com and across the CBS Audience Network.
