MTV, formerly an initialism of Music Television, is an American network based in New York City that launched on August 1, 1981. The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by on-air hosts known as VJs.
At one time, MTV had a profound impact on the music industry and popular culture. Slogans such as “I want my MTV” and “MTV is here” became embedded in public thought, the concept of the VJ was popularized, the idea of a dedicated video-based outlet for music was introduced, and both artists and fans found a central location for concert music events, news, and promotion. MTV has also been referenced countless times in popular culture by musicians, other TV channels and television program, films, and books.
MTV has spawned numerous sister channels in the U.S. and affiliated channels internationally, some of which, like the former MTV Tempo now known as TEMPO Networks, have gone independent. MTV’s moral influence on young people, including issues related to…
The legitimization of YouTube continues. We've already seen YouTube stars getting TV deals like Rhett & Link or Epic Meal Time. We've seen YouTube stars grab some awesome endorsement deals and promotional arrangements as well (like Hyndai's Christmas commercials featuring YouTube celebrities). And now the feature film world is even beginning to feel "the YouTube effect," ...
What's this? Xbox is tearing it up in regards to streaming video moves lately? I wonder if they felt like they might be falling behind on the home entertainment front to Sony, who has that whole Sony Pictures division (which includes Columbia, Tri-Star and like a dozen other studios) and oh let's not forget that ...
Somehow, MTV believes there aren't enough viral video clip shows on television. Joining Web Soup and Tosh.0 is Ridiculousness, hosted by Rob Dyrdek of the network's Fantasy Factory. It premiered this Monday night. Already, it looks like some Wikipedia prankster has "mistakenly" referred to Dyrdek's show as Web Soup, the hyperlink of which leads to ...

Steve has been in the video curation business for decades professing for years that curation is the most effective way of marketing with video; and we share some examples of businesses who are actively doing video curation ...
I try to find at least one great branded viral video each week to highlight, separate from the Friday round ups, so we can have frequent examples of how some companies are doing video advertising right. This week, there were two ads that really grabbed my attention, and I simply couldn't bring myself to choose ...
I'm pondering perhaps a weekly Internet TV industry article as it seems there are more and more things going on in the space every week. I just fear that one week there will be nothing and you'll be over there twiddling your thumbs and mumbling under your breath about what a douche I am for ...
Time Warner Cable has an iPad app. Through that app you are able to stream channels that you would have in your cable package if you were one of their 15 million subscribers. However, they took some flak from major studios when they did that and so pulled some dozen channels. Included in those channels ...
The landscape of viral video is constantly changing. If you don't like the current most-popular video that everyone's talking about... just wait a few minutes... something else entirely different will come along. Anyone has a shot at success, from the brands to the little guys. Videos can go viral the day they're launched, or two ...
The interview with Tim was only about a half hour, but there was so much information to pull out of it I figured it would be better appreciated it if were split into two pieces. Plus, each piece is about a thousand words and that's more than long enough for online reading. You can read ...
comScore has once again let loose with the who's who in online video otherwise known as its monthly Video Metrix. The gist is that 175 million U.S. Internet users watched online video content in October for an average of 15.1 hours per viewer. When the ivi launch press release crossed my desk, to say I was interested would be an understatement. For those that don't know ivi is an application that takes broadcast television, currently only from Seattle and New York, and streams it to your desktop, anywhere in the world. That Sunday, when I saw the NFL ...
SRS Labs, Inc. has teamed up with Microsoft to offer full SRS 5.1 Surround Sound via a new toolkit for the platform. That means Silverlight will soon feature encoding and decoding of surround sound for streaming content.

Good grief. This is one of the best weeks for viral videos since I’ve been writing this weekly Round Up article. There is so much good content to feature and reverse-engineer that I had a terrible time choosing which viral successes to feature. Needless to say, the Honorable Mention section will be a bit… expanded ...
