VSEO – Video Search Engine Optimization (VSEO) Session
The following is a recap of the session, titled “Video Search Engine Optimization (VSEO),” from the Search Engine Strategies (SES) conference in San Jose, CA – August 18th, 2008
The big hero of this session was TubeMogul. As you all know, TubeMogul is a service that enables you to syndicate your videos to all of the major video sites. It also provides analytics tools for monitoring performance across each of the syndicated sites. Gregory Markel was the first to mention it (stating several times that he has no financial interest in the company), and several other panelists said that they use it as well. Although Tubemogul is not a tool to optimize video hosted on your own site, it is a strategy for search engine visibility via syndication of video content across multiple popular video sharing websites.
YouTube Speech-to-Text Recognition Functionality
YouTube, you know that Google-owned online video service, has decided that rich metadata may be the way to go. They believe that it could make a big splash and change the way that videos are indexed.
Adobe Works to Make Video Search Indexing Easier
We all know how much work it is to transcribe audio or video to text. Adobe knows as well and is doing something about it. Adobe is set to release a new version of Flash that will feature speech-to-text technology for automatic transcription and it will be incorporated into their video creation applications like Premiere as well.
HTML 5 Video Element – New Open Video Format Tags
HTML is of course the major language of the web. Over time the web grows into new areas not previously envisioned by W3C and the holders of the HTML protocol so from time to time they must bring out a newer, up-to-date, version of the language. The current version of HTML is 4.
Search Engines Use UGC to Improve Video Search
As you likely have heard, Youtube recently a new annotations feature that basically enables video creators to add add background information to a video hosted on Youtube. You can also use the annotations to link to related YouTube videos, channels, or search results from within a video.

Just this past weekend, Metacafe announced a new feature and beta wiki platform called Wikicafe beta program. With this new program, registered users will be able to collaborate with online videos and will have the ability to edit, enhance, and even translate video tags, descriptions, and other types of metadata. You can translate the metadata into one of 6 different languages (Spanish, Italian, French, Dutch, German, and Hebrew).
So, the real question is… what is the driving force behind the decision to add these user generated content (UGC) features to online video websites? Are Youtube and Metacafe simply doing their best to add cool new features that users have asking for? Or, is there another reason for these new features?
