Leveraging the Power of YouTube for Search Marketing

At SES San Jose 2009 last month, we had a chance to chat with our friend Greg Jarobe, co-founder of SEO-PR and author of “YouTube Marketing – An Hour a Day.” Greg talks about YouTube and why internet marketers and search marketing professionals would be mistaken to ignore the power of YouTube Marketing.

Greg Jarboe – IP Extremism vs Fair Use with Online Video

At SES San Jose 2009, I spoke with Greg Jarboe, President and Co-Founder of SEO-PR, about some common legal questions and issues with regard to online video.  Greg talks about “IP extremism” – the increase of attorneys’ knee-jerk legal reactions – including cease-and-desist orders and sometimes lawsuits –to seeing any instance of their client’s owned video content being up on YouTube and everywhere on the web by others even if those uses clearly fall under legally protected fair use guidelines.

SES San Jose 2009 Offers New Focus on Social Media & Video

ses09 logo 200x69 SES San Jose 2009 Offers New Focus on Social Media & VideoThe Search Engines Strategies Conference & Expo (SES for short) has got some big names lined up. It was recently announced that on 11 August,  Clickz, Google and YouTube will hold an event (no not for Christophor Rick’s Birthday…though it’s the same day) in conjunction with SES that will be focused entirely on Social Media and Video Strategy.

Kristin Kovner, the Industry Marketing Manager at YouTube, posted the following on the Youtube Biz Blog,

“We’re excited to be a part of this first-time ever event. SES is one of the best places for businesses to learn about search; now that YouTube has millions of searches each day, it’s only fitting that ClickZ and SES are expanding the agenda to include a full day dedicated to video and social media.”

What?  That is right, an entire day will be dedicated to Social Media and Video Strategies.  Yipee.  I’m going.

oops 200x184 Web Video Marketing 10 Common Marketing MistakesThis week there was a good post by Michael Kolowich of ChannelOne Marketing titled, “Ten Ways Marketers Drop the Ball in Video Marketing.”  Michael offers some advice as far as what not to do upon deploying a web video marketing project.  I thought it would be a good idea to summarize and elaborate a bit.

In Search of Online Video. The Case for Video SEO

Yesterday, I could not get out of my head a comment made by a panelist on the session, “Video Search Engine Optimization (VSEO)” at SES, namely Greg Jarboe.  Greg mentioned an example video whereby most users who watched the video, discovered the video primarily through social sharing mechanisms (sharing, embedding, etc…) vs. video search.   Specifically, he presents findings for a video about Nicholas Carr and goes on to point out that 7.4% of views came from search, 71% from embedded players.  He also talks about the dominance of Youtube and the need to focus optimization efforts for youtube.

I completely agree with what I think was Greg’s point, namely the importance of taking advantage of all means to drive traffic to your videos and that video search is only one piece.  Really, I think that Greg’s point was that video marketing and optimization goes beyond just video SEO, and perhaps we need another definition or term. However, I wonder if some folks in the audience were thinking… “If only 7.4% of views came from search, why do I need to know about video SEO?”  So, because this was bugging me all night, my plan today was to do some research and find out whether this is an accurate representation of video discoverability overall.

VSEO – Video Search Engine Optimization (VSEO) Session

The following is a recap of the session, titled “Video Search Engine Optimization (VSEO),” from the Search Engine Strategies (SES) conference in San Jose, CA – August 18th, 2008

The big hero of this session was TubeMogul. As you all know, TubeMogul is a service that enables you to syndicate your videos to all of the major video sites. It also provides analytics tools for monitoring performance across each of the syndicated sites. Gregory Markel was the first to mention it (stating several times that he has no financial interest in the company), and several other panelists said that they use it as well. Although Tubemogul is not a tool to optimize video hosted on your own site, it is a strategy for search engine visibility via syndication of video content across multiple popular video sharing websites.
