Univision/YouTube Partnership Is A Bigger Deal Than You Think

spanish univisionDid you see the headline earlier this week that YouTube had struck a deal with Spanish Television Network, Univision?  If you’re a typical American, you might have passed right over it.  Maybe you noted it mentally, but figured it wasn’t terribly important to you since you don’t speak Spanish.

The deal actually seems pretty important to me for two big reasons:

July was a big month all around for online video (according to comScore) but perhaps it was the biggest month yet for Hulu who, according to various research, surpassed Time Warner in viewership during the month. Could this be the turning point for the cable giant or is it just a fluke due to lack of interesting things to see?

Video Ads In Your Print Magazines?

how I met your motherEntertainment Weekly’s September 18th edition will contain an unprecedented piece of content:  a video ad.  Pepsi and CBS have teamed up for the ad that will run spots for several CBS shows like “How I Met Your Mother” and “Two and a Half Men,” as well as a commercial for Pepsi Max.  The video contains 40 minutes worth of spots.

Just in case you didn’t hear me… that’s 40 minutes of ad videos inside your magazine.  I can barely stand to watch 4 minutes of TV commercials between segments of Lost, let alone 40 minutes of ads that aren’t even sandwiched between other pieces of video content I’m actually interested in.

YouTube led the growth charge, accounting for 91 percent of the incremental gain in the number of videos viewed versus December, as it surpassed 100 million viewers for the first time.
