The Week in Online Video News & Views: 16th March 2014

Video streaming is so popular in Britain that the UK government is now using it to help calculate inflation rates. Netflix and Amazon Prime have been added to the UK's "basket of goods," to get a clearer measure of what consumers are actually spending money on these days. In a sign of the times, DVRs (Sky+, TvVo etc) have also been added to the data, while DVD recorders have been dropped. So, just how big is the streaming video market in the UK? According to new figures, an overwhelming demand for streaming services led to an increase in the UK home entertainment sector to £5.3bn, with the fastest growing areas being subscription based VoD, including Netflix, which was up 120% on the year.

Facebook auto-play news feed ads are now live and in a bid to keep up, Twitter has hired an ex-YouTuber to improve the quality of its video offering as well as find ways of monetizing it. Baljeet Singh has spent the last 5 years at Google and was responsible for developing the skippable pre-roll advertisements on the site. As well as selling more ads against video content on Twitter, Singh's brief is also to make video more discoverable for users. These, and other stories of the past 7 days, from ReelSEO.
