Netflix is bringing yet another original series to their platform, teaming up with Lana and Andy Wachowski for a sci-fi series called Sense8. Although Netflix has been mum about how well their first true original show House of Cards actually did (they say it's their most watched show of all time), almost everyone I ran into said they liked it and it had almost universal critical acclaim, I think we can call it a success. And with the resurrection of Arrested Development coming soon, and another deal to bring children's show Turbo F.A.S.T. to the service, Netflix has been making some pretty awesome moves in original programming.
What Will Sense8 Be About and When Can We Watch It?
The Wachowskis, known chiefly for The Matrix, will be teaming with J. Michael Straczynski, who was the show runner on Babylon 5. So, with that kind of pedigree, obviously Sense8 will be sci-fi, and according to the Wachowskis, the show sprung out of a conversation with Straczynski:
Several years ago, we had a late night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox Sense8 was born.
The press release states that it's "a gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted."
Yeah, not much to go on there, but the show doesn't come out until 2014, so, plenty of time before we really need to know I guess.
This could be the start of "original show wars," really, if it already hasn't happened in some form. Amazon recently acquired the rights to run a TV series based on the cult-hit movie Zombieland. Mainly, the original programming stems from the problem that rental services have of not owning the content rights for most of the things they provide, and they are at the mercy of the studios that do. So, having something they can call their own and drive subscriptions is a baby step towards not being totally, completely dependent on the content rights owners, following the HBO model.
