Netflix's first major original series, House of Cards, has made Emmy history with 9 nominations including Best Drama Series, Lead Actress (Robin Wright) and Lead Actor (Kevin Spacey). It's the first time that the awards have given a nod to content that was delivered exclusively online. The 4th season of Arrested Development, also a Netflix exclusive, received 3 nominations. In broadcasting terms it's kind of a big deal - Netflix are the first company to receive any kind of nomination from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for an online-only show.
Executive Producer and lead star of 'House of Cards', Kevin Spacey said of the nominations:
The fact that there’s been so much talk about whether the series would break through, would the Academy be able to recognize a series being discovered in such a new way, the fact that we not only did that but that we got nine nominations is an incredible acknowledgement of the work we’ve done.
There's no word on the official release date for series 2 of the Washington based drama. For those who haven't seen it, here's a taster from the trailer for series 1.
Behind The Candelabra, Games of Thrones, SNL and American Horror Story: Asylum all received a substantial number of nominations. The whole list can be found here. The awards take place on September 22nd in Los Angeles.
