Hulu will launch its free video streaming service on March 12, when the service exits its five-month-long private beta phase and becomes accessible to all public users. Hulu has attracted a ton of attention from the press and for good reason, the site is backed by not only News Corp. and NBC Universal, but it has partnered with some of the biggest content producers in the world. This includes the newest partners to be added to Hulu, Warner Brothers, Lionsgate, the NBA, and NHL.
Content clearly drives the video market. Support from these heavy hitting content producers is one of the primary things that sets Hulu apart from the crowd of streaming video competitors. We have seen how content drives the video market with the battle between blu-ray and HD DVD whereby Blu-ray had more than 70% of Hollywood studio's which ultimately won the competitioni. however, with sites like Hulu (I was a beta tester), it is hard to really envision a need to posses media at all. Think about it, how many kids these days do you see purchasing DVDs, CDs, etc...? None, and they have mobile devices, if not ipods as well, and gaming devices. I digress...
Here is what I like about Hulu aside from the incredible quality of content; Hulu has a clean and consistent presentation that makes navigation simple and user friendly. But really, it is the content. The site has an impressive selection and variety of video titles, and all are big-ticket shows and movies from Hollywood and available via television. Many competing websites contain video of varying quality from lesser-known content producers, which may provide just as much entertainment, but different from the production quality of a major TV show, feature film, or professional sports--all of which are found on Hulu. You can even find high-definition HD videos on Hulu.
It would be nice if they added even more content and would be incredible if they ever allowed Adobe Air sort-of desktop rental widget.
