HBO Is Testing New Online Video Service
According to the Wall Street Journal, HBO is currently testing a new online video service that allows subscribers to watch their programming on computers or download for later viewing.
The new service, HBO Broadband, is being tested currently in Green Bay Wisconsin. According to HBO, if successful, this will be rolled out more widely later in 2008
The plans are that the new service would be available only through cable providers and HBO subscribers. The service may include an additional or bundled fee. This is the business model that HBO's VOD (video-on demand) service currently employs.
HBO has made some limited efforts previously to market its programs online. However, HBO Broadband would be the first offering whereby HBO allows a broad selection of their programming to be aired over the internet.
Many broadcasters currently offer programming through the Web and other digital channels. It is nice to see that HBO is working to fall in line with this trend.
