Google Plus Is Exploding With Growth With Millions Joining Every Day

Well, in my last article about Google Plus, regarding their cute attempt to lure Facebook users disgruntled at the recent layout changes, I mentioned I was looking forward to hearing some of those early speculative numbers on growth. It turns out... I didn't have to wait very long, because Ancestry.com founder Paul Allen is up to his statistical tricks again, claiming that Google Plus is exploding with growth since they opened the doors to the public earlier this week.

In fact, he says millions are joining the service every day, with as much as 30% growth in just the last two days. That's insane.

On September 9, his estimate model had Google Plus at 28.7 million users. This morning, however, he says the site stood at 37.8 million users. He also uses a "fudge factor" to estimate private profiles and non-Roman alphabet profiles, which brings his total up to 43.4 million users.

The timing on Google+ opening up to the public is interesting. Facebook has made a ton of UI changes this week and is holding it's F8 Developers Conference today - in fact it is just staring now. According to a survey this week by Mashable, 72.2% of Facebook users hate the recent UI changes, including the News Feed redesign. Twitter's stream was filled with complaints yesterday about Facebook under the hashtag #newfacebook.

Now, it's important to point out that this is one man's model--albeit a very, very smart man. Google themselves have not addressed the total number of users very much, so speculative math like Allen's is all we really have to go on.

But even with a large margin of error, Allen's numbers show a huge surge in sign-ups since Google Plus rolled out the red carpet to the general public.

Facebook is hoping to steal some of the spotlight back from Google Plus with their annual f8 event. For instance, they made a huge announcement today with Timeline, which will reportedly eventually become the default profile for users.

But 43 million users in a handful of months? And a lot of that coming in the last two days? I think it's safe to say Google Plus is going to be around a while. It's a long, long road to truly challenge Facebook's dominance, but the growth of Google Plus has already exceeded what even some optimistic analysts predicted.

    Facebook is trying to be a lot to be like Google+ lately. The latest copied facility being "View As..." Before I can flaunt my specific friend list I created to the outside world; now it's just for me. Isn't it Google+ Circles? LOL! And I thought where has "____ is now friends with ____" thing disappeared from my wall? Ah, it's there in my "LISTS". This again copied from Google+ Games Stream :D

    By the way, Google+ may or may not overtake the number of users in Facebook, because its' just not designed for that. It's designed only for people over the age of 18, whereas in Facebook we find tiny toddlers as small as 13 having fun :D

    In setting up Facebook I used a totally different set of criteria then I did using Google Plus because of the functionality and settings. This could be a good advantage for G+

    Yes welcome GOOGLE+ finally some real competition for facebook. It's going to take some time to get people onboard but it will happen. Ive sent an invite to all my facebook friends and in the firt day 10 had already signed up....lookout facebook your days are numbered cause google is good and its here to stay...!!!!

    I can't say much, except that I don't really like Facebook, in fact I have disliked it for years, but the fact there werent any better choices kept me hooked, well thanks to Google and their recent genius I feel I can finally say goodbye to Facebook.

    Everybody wants to sign up, which alone counts for the phenomenal growth. Signing up for something new and shiny is human nature. But leaving all your FB legacy information behind is something else. Very few will be on both FB and G+ long-term. Google must find a way to make G+ the social site of choice, or all the growth numbers won't mean a thing.

    G+ ain't touching Facebook, ever. Sure there's lots of RaRa users here for G+, but that's because the facebook users are busy on Facebook! Sure, anyone will click an accept an invite 'cuz it sounds sexy, but the usage is low per user average.

    G+ offers no significant way to feel a private network of friends and is simple too confusing for the Masses. As one poster here put it, I'm discovering strangers...
    Thus, FB will stay the default Friends and Family place to hang. Facebook has no interest in you discovering strangers. Friends are supposed to be, well, friends and Facebook was bound to improve the friend lists.

    G+ copied a whole host of stuff from Facebook before it was born.. and circles.
    Lycos, in 2004!

    I'm pro-neither, but G+ couldn't catch FB.

    Google plus is just another facebook. It's difficult to use as a business tool as they constantly block how many friends you can have, for an individual it may be ok but for a business forgetabout it.

    Social Media group of empires is Google Plus. It started with a rock road, telling businesses that it was a “no go area” for them, months later Google opened it’s doors to business profiles – though they acted just like human profiles, and still do largely. Google+ is still on the small side, its take up in the UK in general isn’t huge but it still has a big effect on business and search marketing. So there is no question that you should be using it for business but what is the best way to do this right now?

Why because you look like a jerk and people will just unfollow you. The same rule stands for Google Plus, consider it a share and share alike service – post only the kind of thing you have seen shared before. And if you like something of course hit +1 and share, the more you do it the more likely others are to with your posts.
