French FlagComScore just recently released new research regarding online video consumption in France. The data indicates that more than 23.2 million French internet consumers (almost 80% of the total French internet audience) watched a total of 2.1 billion videos online in Jan 2008 alone. indicating that 23.2 million French Internet users viewed 2.1 billion videos online in January 2008.

In addition, although Google has the largest share in France in terms of the online video market, 3 of the top 5 sites are all French companies. France's video sharing giant – Dailymotion – ranked as the second most visited site with 16.8% of the market in France for online video. According to the research, 10 million viewers each watched an average of almost 35 videos per person.

So, are French users biased towards French-run online video platforms? Probably not, although the research seems to indicate that. More likely this is due to marketing efforts on the part of companies like Dailymotion, the social aspects that drive online video consumption, and the fact that French people appear to love to consume online video content. Interesting, none-the-less.

Other notable findings from January 2008 include:

  • The combined French online video viewing audience watched a total 140 million hours of video content.
  • French viewers watched a total of 28 million hours of online video on Dailymotion.com, more than any other property.
  • 11.8 million viewers watched 571 million videos on YouTube.com (48.4 videos per viewer).
  • The average online video duration was 4 minutes.
