UK Broadcaster Channel 4 Removes All Long form YouTube Content

UK broadcaster Channel 4 has removed its entire archive of long-form video content from YouTube in a bid to shift focus to its own VoD service 4oD. All videos uploaded in the past year have been removed from the 4oD YouTube Channel and only short snippets of programmes remain on the Channel 4 YouTube Channel.

Viewers who tried to access Peep Show, Deal or No Deal, The Inbetweeners, GoogleBox, and other shows from the broadcaster via their Channel 4, More4, 4oD and E4 YouTube channels were met with the following message:

As you may have noticed, we've now removed all full episodes of Channel 4, E4 and More4 programmes from our 4oD channels on YouTube. As a not-for-profit broadcaster funded by advertising, we put our money back into the programmes themselves. To make the best of this investment, we've decided to focus on bringing online viewers of our full-length shows to our own 4oD apps – such as those on iOS, Android and channel4.com. These apps also allow us to encourage more viewing by recommending programmes we think people will appreciate, and to provide viewers with additional services.

Trailers for Channel 4 programmes will remain on the broadcasters YouTube pages and Channel 4 promise “loads of exciting plans for YouTube content” although no further details were given. The move away from YouTube means that Channel 4 will keep all future advertising revenue earned from their video on demand content. They don't appear to be running any ads against their remaining short form content on the YouTube site.

    Now there's reel turn around – C4 were one of the first to move to YT as their primary long form host. Must mean they now believe they have a viewing community outside YT to build their ad revenue.
