Boxee Said To Drop The PC Client Biz With Latest Boxee 1.5 Version

Boxee version 1.5 will be the last PC client there is, it seems they no longer want to support that build your own Boxee box initiative. It's partly because they see the Internet TV revolution moving away from Boxee-style boxes and instead going to connected TVs and secondary devices. But I'm not so sure that I can agree with them, perhaps they just don't see a way clear to build in all the support they need in one client and so are hanging up their hats. That's OK though, things like Google TV and the new wave of connected TVs will surely take up some of the slack. Seems they think that no one will want to watch video on their desktop TVs anymore (seems they haven't met a lot of us).

In regards to navigation, everything is a bit streamlined so that you can click less and get to where you need to go. Along with that, they've improved movie and TV browsing by genre, source, etc. For TV shows you can now more easily see the seasons, etc. All of the content now has more information pulled into it and quick access to things like trailers for films, etc.

Another interesting item is a new HTML5 WebKit browsing experience and it also now supports HTTP Live Streaming.

Here's their notes on the end of the PC Client:

This 1.5 release will be the last version of Boxee for PC/Mac/Ubuntu. It will be available on Boxee.tv through the end of January.

We believe the future of TV will be driven by devices such as the Boxee Box, Connected TVs / Blu-Rays and 2nd screen devices such as tablets and phones. While there are still many users who have computers connected to their TVs, we believe this use case is likely to decline as users find better alternatives. People will continue to watch a lot of video on their computer, but it is more likely to be a laptop than a home-theater PC and probably through a browser rather than downloaded software.

Because of the DRM restrictions some applications like Netflix, VUDU, and Pandora won't work and won't have apps. Then again, you're on a PC already and you only need a web browser to get to them right?
