The BBC has confirmed that tablet views for video content on their iPlayer platform have overtaken PCs, pushing tablet viewing past PC streaming for the first time in iPlayer history. In May 2013, iPlayer viewing on tablets overtook those on mobile phones, but the latest figures suggest that viewers are even more comfortable accessing BBC content via their iPads, Kindles, Hudl's and other tablets than ever before. New Year’s Day was the best day ever for the iPlayer with 11 million TV and radio programme requests recorded for the BBC’s catch-up service. It was no coincidence that New Year's Day also saw the launch of series 3 of Sherlock, featuring everyone's favorite English icon, Benedict Cumberbatch. Those figures compare favorably with 2012 when 8.1 million requests were received on New Years Day. That's an increase of 35% year-on-year.
The corporation also confirmed, in a blog post released today that, unsurprisingly, the Doctor Who Special, where Matt Smith bows out and Peter Capaldi regenerates as the 12th Time Lord, (re)generated two million requests over the festive period, making it the single most requested programme. The sci-fi special beat perennial UK favourites like Eastenders, Mrs Brown’s Boys and Call the Midwife to take first place. It's the second year in a row that Dr Who has topped the iPlayer Christmas viewing chart – it received an impressive 1.47 million requests in 2012.
The BBC also confirmed that it had 102 million iPlayer requests for TV and radio programs between Dec. 21, 2013 and Jan. 1, 2014. More than 80 million viewers downloaded TV content while 22 million turned to the iPlayer app for radio. There were also just over 940,000 downloads of its iPlayer mobile apps between December 21st and New Year's Day.
The increasing ownership of tablet and smartphone devices is set to fuel even more growth in demand for such online services during 2014.
