Battle of the Mobile Brands Dominates YouTube Top 10 Rankings

Battle of the Mobile Brands Dominates YouTube Top 10 Rankings

Yes, the contest to win the World Series starts on Wednesday. And, yes, the struggle for the White House looks like it will be won or lost in 10 battleground states. But the competition that online video marketers are watching like a hawk is the epic clash between Samsung Mobile and Apple on YouTube. Let’s call it the Battle of the Mobile Brands.

To get a ringside seat, head over to the Socialbakers Blog. On Friday, Socialbakers presented a list of the 10 most popular YouTube videos for brands in the last month (Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, 2012).

Topping the list were videos from Samsung Mobile, Rovio Entertainment, Red Bull, and Old Spice. They were followed by more videos from Rovio Entertainment and Samsung Mobile. And they, in turn, were followed by a video from Apple, which appeared in 7th place.

This is surprising because Apple announced the iPhone 5 on Sept. 12. The iPhone 5 became available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, the U.K., and the U.S. on Sept. 21. And the iPhone 5 rolled out in 22 more countries on Sept. 28.

So, I would have expected a YouTube video featuring the mobile brand would have ranked higher in the Socialbakers’ YouTube statistics during that timeframe. But, it didn’t.

Top 10 Most Viewed YouTube Videos By Brands: Sept. 15-Oct. 15

1. [GALAXY Note II] Introducing Samsung GALAXY Note II

Samsung Galaxy Note II has also just entered the market. Although this eight-minute video plays music similar to the one in call operating centers, it does a good job of introducing all the innovative features the mobile brand delivers to consumers. The video was published on Oct. 5 and had 14,428,834 views as of Oct. 15.

2. Bad Piggies official gameplay trailer

Rovio Mobile, the creators of the Angry Birds, claim that they’ve created the “piggest game ever”. On Sept. 18, they published the trailer to Bad Piggies and it had received over 7 million views as of Oct. 15.

3. Human-Powered Freerunning Machine – with Jason Paul

The Red Bull channel uploaded this video on Oct. 3 and it had over 5 million views as of Oct. 15. German free runner Jason Paul and his Team Farang took simple tasks and performed them in a complex and oversized manner in an abandoned factory in Hamburg.

4. Old Spice | Bed

Old Spice uploaded this video on Sept. 22. It features Greg Jennings, a wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers, who disproves the following myth: “A wise man once said: never mix business with pleasure. But when you use Old Spice Champion, mixing business with pleasure is nobody’s business.” The video had almost 4 million views as of Oct. 15.

5. Angry Birds Star Wars out on November 8!

Rovio Mobile published a video on Oct. 8 that lets fans know the Angry Birds and Star Wars universes will collide on Nov. 8 in a new game. With 3.7 million views as of Oct. 15, it appears this may be their best game to date.

6. [GALAXY Note 10.1] Art and design with Tristan Eaton

Samsung Mobile gave renowned artist and toy designer, Tristan Eaton, a Galaxy Note 10.1 to see how he would incorporate it into his art and life. This strategy proved to be very effective because people could see not only the tablet’s features, but also how they can be implemented in their everyday life. This video was published on Sept. 20 and had 3,393,438 views as of Oct. 15.

7. Apple – iPhone 5 – TV Ad – Thumb

The iPhone 5 introduced a bigger screen, but Apple still claims it is the perfect size for everything – including your thumb. The video asks: Is it a coincidence or common sense? This “thumb commercial” was published Sept. 21 and had 2,374,313 views as of Oct. 15.

8. Madden 13 PlayStation Vita Commercial

Even if you’re not a Playstation fan, you should watch this video just for the fun of seeing a grown up man do the peacock dance. The main message is that the console quality gaming is so good that you can play like you do at home. This video was uploaded on Sept. 17 and had 2,266,526 views as of Oct. 15.

9. #GOFORTH

You will either love or hate this Levi’s video, with probably nothing in between. It’s based on a poem that wants you to believe that Levi’s isn’t just about looking good, but also about doing good. Published on Oct. 4, this video had 2,256,425 views as of Oct. 15.

10. Bad Piggies Cinematic Trailer

If watching the Bad Piggies game tutorial wasn’t enough, you can watch this film trailer-like video. It was published on Sept. 17 and had 2,205,676 views as of Oct. 15.

So, what can online video marketers learn from these rankings? Yes, Samsung Mobile is beating Apple in the early phase of the Battle of the Mobile Brands. But, as Captain John Paul Jones once said, “I have not yet begun to fight!”
